President & CEO, Pretty Brainy, Inc., online at prettybrainy.com. Devoted to smart, active girls 7 to 14 years old, Pretty Brainy designs apparel and accessories that enhance a girl’s life now and for her future. Follow our progress at twitter.com/PrettyBrainy.
Pretty Brainy Ts give girls a broader view of the world (beyond hannah montana), introducing them to heroes including Jackie Cochran and Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Shirt designs also include crib sheets to academics girls often find the most challenging.
The girl-focused idea came, in part, from Heidi’s work teaching journalism and wanting to use copy as a design element. She had wanted the perfect gift for her 7-year-old niece, who was science-minded and entrepreneurial. When even Discovery Kids let Heidi down, she knew in a flash she would create the gift for which she was searching. Seven years later, she resigned a nonprofit executive directorship to found Pretty Brainy.
The purpose behind the endeavor is to shift the perspective and expectation of what girls are capable of in the world. Heidi blogs about Pretty Brainy for girls, parents and educators at prettybrainy.com.
Heidi is also grateful for these honors and associations: Recipient, Boettcher Foundation Teacher Award, 1998, for Journalism Education. Recipient, Bronze Quill Award and Bronze Quill Award of Merit from the International Assoc. of Business Communicators. Member, 1999-2007, Longmont Public Library Advisory Board. Founder, the City of Longmont’s Favorite Poem Project.
Among former professional experiences of which she is most fond, Heidi wrote for Zenith Woman Magazine, Judy Taylor, publisher.
